Karna Purana, the Sanskrit term for the administration of warm herb-infused oils into the ear canal, is a ritual used to help maintain health of the ear and jaw. In Ayurveda, ear cleansing can also be done in a more therapeutic sense to center imbalances caused by the accumulation of excess Vata and environmental factors such as wind, air travel, and overstimulation. Vata is considered to be flowing, cold, dry and rough, and these factors are easily disturbed and unbalanced with the daily pressures of life. The ears are where Vata is known to reside. The treatment for this is Karna Purana because it calms Vata by bringing the opposite qualities into it’s environment. Ear oiling is warm, moist, smooth, and stable. This ritual has been proven to prevent things ear infections and reduce dryness, tinnitus, neck and jaw tension, headaches, TMJ symptoms, vertigo, and wax overgrowth.
